How much is my business worth?
Updated: Oct 12
if you’re thinking about selling your business, one question probably comes first:
“How much is my business worth?”
But here’s the problem:
Revenue isn’t valuation. Profit isn’t valuation. And a competitor’s valuation isn’t automatically yours.
Imagine two businesses, both generating ₹5 crore in annual revenue.
One has recurring customers, predictable cash flow and a management team that can operate without its owner.
The other depends heavily on its founder and gets most of its revenue from a few customers.
Same revenue. Very different business.
That’s why a proper business valuation before selling a business looks beyond revenue and examines the factors a potential buyer may actually care about.
What Can Influence Business Value?
01 — Earnings
Are current profits sustainable, or were they driven by a particularly strong year?
02 — Cash Flow
How much economic benefit does the business actually generate after its operating and investment requirements?
03 — Risk
What happens if the largest customer leaves—or the owner steps away?
04 — Growth
Is future growth supported by real demand, capacity and a credible pipeline?
05 — Market Evidence
How do comparable companies and relevant transactions provide context for the valuation?
Here’s a Simple Example
An owner says:
“We’re growing 30% every year, so the business should command a premium.”
A buyer may ask:
“What’s driving that growth?”
If it’s supported by signed contracts, increasing demand and a strong sales pipeline, there’s evidence behind the forecast.
If it’s simply an expectation, it’s an assumption.
The difference between evidence and assumption can matter significantly when assessing business value.
Before You Sell, Ask Yourself 3 Questions
1. How sustainable are my current earnings?
2. How dependent is the business on me?
3. What evidence supports my future growth?
These questions won’t give you a valuation by themselves.
But they can help you understand what a potential buyer may examine before agreeing on a price.
Because business valuation isn’t just about finding a number.
It’s about understanding the story behind the number—and whether the evidence supports it.
